The Animal Welfare Committee met on April 27 at the Town Hall. Five members were present to
establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were: Carol Treska, Stacy Howard, Diane Carle and
Richard Myers.
• The total Animal Welfare account is $13,105.93. The non - profit (Mansfield Shelter Friends) account
balance is slightly over $50,100 — including $40,000 that was recently transferred from the Town account.
• One of the goals of the meeting was to encourage interested parties to sign up for the new AWC which
will consist of five full and two alternate members. These names will soon be forwarded from the Town
Clerk to the Board of Selectmen for review.
• Mansfield Shelter Friends voted to fund the printing and postage of the shelter newsletter that will be
mailed to all Town residents in the next few weeks.
• We currently have eight cats and four dogs at the shelter. A family of new -born kittens is being fostered
until they are old enough to be adopted.
• The AWC voted to authorize up to $100 in funding for treatment of Mako, a kitten that has a tooth that
may need to be surgically removed — the procedure should be first approved by the Humane Officer and
volunteer vet.
• Shelter volunteers are looking at July 29 to sponsor a fund - raiser on the South Common. They are
looking for new ideas to increase interest in the day -long event.
• The Committee discussed at length a list of issues that the new AWC will face, including the forming of a
sub - committee to meet with Town officials to update Chapter 8 of the Town By -laws. Other issues
include animal medical care, rabies shots for volunteers, communications and building a new shelter.
The next AWC meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall on Thursday. May 18.
