HomeMy WebLinkAboutFin Comm Minutes 3/11/2004Town of Mansfield Finance Committee March 11, 2004 (; Presiding: Frank DelVecchio Present: James Lazzara, Jack Goldberg, Charlene Lavin, Michael Sams, John Moretti, refdcy Sankey and Jean Miller Acting Chairman DelVecchio called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. The regular business of the fmcom was suspended to discuss School budget issues. Mr. Moretti commented that it might be better if the date to submit their budget could be later. A later submission would allow for better numbers based on information that is unavailable in December when the budget is finalized. The current deadline causes the use of "worst case" scenarios for grants and other funding sources. Mr. Moretti reviewed, in detail, reductions from the original budget submission that were not yet approved by the School Committee. If approved, the School revised budget would be approximately $2 — $2.2 million less than the original request. Mr. Sankey indicated that the budget does not include any significant new initiatives. Fincom representatives inquired about many matters including fees for certain athletic and arts programs. Ms. Miller indicated her reluctance in this area and preferred to look at other budget areas before agreeing to any fees. The representatives of the schools indicated there would be significant resistance to any proposal for fees. Mr. Moretti indicated that: this revised budget was as low as he felt they could go without serious and significant disruption and reduction to the educational program in the Town, that the grant that enabled a police officer to be present in the school was expiring and that recent events made it clear to him that hiring another police officer so that this could continue was very important and that negotiations with the teacher's union continues.
