4. VISITORS
Susan Stevens, American Lung Association of SE Mass., presented the
Radon Education Program for the Town of Mansfield, that the BOH had agreed
to participate in. She explained the facts and dangers of radon and that it
is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, next to smoking. The campaign
goals are to make residents aware of radon as a health risk and to increase
home testing. ALA -SEM will provide test kits for $9.95 each and will handle
all the advertising for the campaign.
The Board's responsibility is to select seven distribution sites, i.e.,
public library, drug store, town hall, bank, school, etc.; set up speaking
engagements for ALA -SEM to discuss radon program; Distribute advertising
material; build a "radon- meter" placed in a highly visible location so that
residents can see how many homes have been tested.
Program begins in the month of February and advertising for it will
begin in January. The towns of Hansen, Hingham and Falmouth are also
participating. There are approx. 4,000 residents in Mansfield. Hopefully,
many radon kits will be sold.
