1. CALL TO ORDER at 5:00 PM by Chair Austin in the Board of Health Office,
210 Chauncy Street
An emergency meeting was held on Monday, June 27th to bring the Board members up to
date regarding the public drinking water situation.
When word was received on Friday morning about the water situation, the Health Agent
drafted an emergency memo to food establishments, contacted Dept. of Public Health, Div.
of Food and Drug and discussed it with senior inspector Priscilla Luongo. Volunteers
contacted the Health Dept. to see if help was needed and I used them to distribute the packet.
All distribution was completed by noon of that day. My secretary and I spent the entire day
answering phone calls, interpreting the water problem, assuring residents that the situation
was not critical.
A concensus was reached on four items: (1) Board examined the issue; (2) examined their
role and areas of responsibility; (3) assumed responsibility in assuring the safety of the food
source for the Town through informing and monitoring food establishments; and (4)
dispensing information and reasurring the public. The Board of Health will strongly
recommend to the Board of Selectmen that a post -mortum meeting be held to assess the
effectiveness of the methods used in this emergency situation.
The consensus of the Board was that it has an "umbrella" responsibility in the public health
of the residents in Mansfield, but not a "line" responsibility to delivering the service of
public water. The responsiblity lies with those licensed by the Commonwealth to run a
Water Department.
Additionally, the Board of Health would like to know what the plans are for the upcoming
Fourth of July weekend re: staffing and availability of water
MOTION: To adjourn at 6:OOPM.
