Special meeting called for 1:00 P.M. this date.
Selectmen Caponigro, Colella, Main and Titus and the Town Manager were
present, and Mr. Fitzmauri.ce and Mr a Barney from the Gas Company.
The meeting was to discuss the proposed 12" gas mains on various streets
in town.
Mr. Fitzmaurice explained that the main would not be a through -town main
to serve: neighboring communities, but it would connect with smaller mains
already existing in the town.
With the new mains, the Gas Company would be able to supply the town
with an adequate supply, and through main sizes large enough to serve the com-
munity through ^the year's ahead.
The gas is not a liquid form when it reaches the storage tank, but is only
about 2# pressure in the mains.
The construction is all approved and inspected by State officials from the
Department of Public Utilities. All joints in the mains ar_e x- rayed for
safety. °..Ofi the average, the main is buried 3' below the road surface.
In the Fast and Pratt Street area the main will be off the road surface. The
backfill is being prepared to the town's specifications in preparation for the
sidewalk. The Gas Company has agreed to do this work in lieu of its usual
loaming and seeding.
Also, since the gas main will cross the bridge at Canoe River, near the Highway
garage, the Gas Company expressed willingness to help with the construction of
a, foot bridge there at the same time.
The Board of Selectmen after full discussion of the proposed route unanimously
approved4heissuance of a, permit.
Chairman Caponigro introduced the letter from the Town Jaycees which expressed
concern that the gas main permit should not be issued until the gas rates are
finally resolved by the Department of Public Utilities.
The Board though felt that this project would only supply existing and future
homes in the town but did not materially affect gas rates in the town or in
the area.
