Re: Street Light Conversion` Program
The attached map of Mansfield shows the current status of the Street
Light Conversion Program. The streets colored orange have been con-
verted to high pressure sodium and the streets colored green still have
the mercury vapor street lighting. To date, we have installed over
800 high pressure sodium lights. We still have a little over 600 to
install on the streets indicated on the map and an additional 170 to
replace in the industrial park and on Francis Avenue.
The program administered by the Massachusetts Department of Public
Works to provide federal funding for street light conversions is still
in effect. Most of the streets shown in green are eligible for this
program.
I am not sure if we want to become involved with the program. It would
be nice to get the money, but it took Wellesley over two years to get
the funding and it took Norwood over a year and a half. I have asked
the people at the M.D.P.W. to see if there are any funds available in
the current budget year or whether we would have to wait until the next
budget year to apply for them. If we decide to go ahead without the
federal funding, we may want to establish priorities for the sequence
of the remaining work.
