HomeMy WebLinkAboutZBA_EXEC(2)_02161993EXECUTIVE SESSION Mr. Wojtkiewicz explained that several weeks ago he received a telephone call from Karen Lawlor. She explained that she had received a telephone call from Dick Lewis, who had been asked by the Town Manager, Bill Williams, to talk to her about bringing her children into the Town Hall when she does her work, It seems there was a complaint that the children were disruptive. The next week Karen brought the children in with her for just a few minutes and again Dick Lewis received a telephone call from Mr. Williams, who wanted to know why the children were with her again. Mr. Wojtkiewicz thought this matter could be worked out without involving all of the Board members. He spoke personally with Mr. Williams who explained that this was a dangerous situation with the children going behind the counter, disrupting the work and people might trip over them (this is a big liability problem). Mr. Wojtkiewicz then spoke with Mrs. Cotton and Richard Lewis about the problem. Mr. Wojtkiewicz could not find any problem with Karen or her work. Karen then spoke to Mr. Wojtkiewicz and explained if she could not bring her children with her, she could not continue to do the job, and then presented her letter of resignation. The letter eventually reached Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams talked again with Mr. Wojtkiewicz over the telephone and the meeting scheduled for next Thursday, February 18, was not to include Karen. Karen explained that she has been doing this job for eleven months and no one has ever complained about the children. She has three children but usually just has the 20 month old baby with her. After she received the first complaint through Dick Lewis she made an effort to hold the baby and to only go into the Town Hall for about 10 minutes at a time. She did xeroxing at the Paine School Building and went in on Wednesday nights (when the Town Hall is open until 8:00 P.M.). Karen was very upset that after doing this Mr. Williams was still complaining to Dick Lewis that she was still bringing in the children. The Board members could not believe what was going on. They felt this was a ridiculous situation. It was suggested to draft a letter for Mr. Wojtkiewicz to bring with him to the February 18th meeting. The letter should state that the ZBA voted unanimously to decline to accept the resignation of Karen Lawlor as the ZBA secretary. She has done this job for eleven months and has performed excellent work. The precedence for ZBA secretaries to bring their children into the Town Hall has been going on for almost 20 years. And all Board members support and stand behind Karen 100 %. A motion was made by Mr. DeTrolio and seconded by Mr. Butler to go out of Executive Session.
