Hardiman and Jim Hatfield; John Sullivan, Town Engineer, Lance Lawson, Traffic
Safety Officer, Deputy Fire Chief Jim Puleo
1. Meeting called to order at 8:30 a.m.
2. Mr. Barrows thanked everyone for attending and stated the purpose of the meeting
was to discuss downtown traffic patterns, including one-way streets, and ways of
alleviating traffic problems downtown. He asked everyone to introduce themselves.
Discussion followed with Mr. Barrows doing a presentation on the number of
businesses downtown, number of vacancies and a brief summary of parking and
traffic related issues.
The group discussed each point in turn. Staffwas asked to comment on their
perception of these issues.
The meeting concluded with Mr. Smith stating that he sees SPREDD's role as
looking at the traffic pattern in the downtown area, while the parking issues are better
left to town staff. He said SRPEDD will put a proposal together, but the town should
recognize there will be gaps in that proposal, such as parking, which will have to be
filled by the work of others.
Mr. Hatfield said it would be unlikely South Coast Rail will fund an examination of
traffic north of Chauncy Street, as they are due to release the South Coast Rail plan
within a month's time. That plan may contain changes to area roadways and parking.
Mr. Barrows thanked everyone for attending and stated he is anticipating a meeting
with downtown merchants and involved parties sometime in August.
3. Adjournment at 10:30 a.m.
