The issue of other intersections being more of a public safety concern was addressed, with Mr. Hebert explaining that this intersection was chosen due to traffic congestion, and that public safety was not the criteria used in the selection of intersections for this particular study. He said the scope was to study the intersection only and does not include the option of putting a new road through the Great Woods. Mr. Hadfield and Mr. Hebert also discussed with the Board the history of this intersection, going back a number of years to the construction of Route 495 and the relocation of Route 140. Mrs. Flynn stated that SRPEDD should have taken the time to provide the Town with the scope of their study prior to proceeding with it. Mr. Burke said that there is no doubt that further development is going to take place in that area which will necessitate road improvements. He stated his concern that if nothing is done, we will end up with a road going right through the Great Woods and that we should encourage the Board of Selectmen to support the study for this reason. Mr. French stated that he sees the study as being beneficial in providing a means to analyze the outcome of the study Campanelli will be doing and that Mansfield is better off being a player than a bystander.
