Adjournment - 11:00 PM Motion: To adjourn. (Robinson - Amoruso) All in favor. Passes. Clerk's Signq` ure Date of Approval I would like to express my disappointment regarding the conduct of participants at Monday's town meeting. I am particularly distressed at the lack of action taken by our Town Moderator during the confrontation which erupted while I had the floor during the soccer field debate. Although the lack of civility demonstrated by the attendees in favor of the soccer questions was appalling, the moderator said nothing to quiet the crowd which shouted at me throughout my comments. During my presentation, I was also assaulted by a member of the audience. He rushed toward me down the aisle - clutching an unidentified object in his hand which I first thought was a gun. At that moment, I truly believed I was about to die. It was the most shocking and horrifying moment of my life. The object turned out to be a textbook which he proceeded to shove in my face while screaming something about his child's homework. Not only did the Moderator stand by during this shameful display, but the police department, supposedly trained to react in a situation such as this, took no action as well. I remembered a quote attributed to Major Richard Daly during the 1968 Chicago riots; "The police are not here to create disorder, the police are here to preserve disorder. " The people who were shouting "This is a democracy" only understand one part of the democratic process. They want their "rights" but are loath to accept the grave responsibilities that are incumbent upon them. Democracy is not solely about fulfilling your needs - what the crowd interpreted as their rights. Participants in the democratic process must also shoulder the heavy burdens placed upon them by the democratic` - to stand up acid be counted, to fight for what is right - not just what is easy. The democratic process, as it applies to our open town meeting, requires that you step forward and identify yourself, state your position, and accept the criticism or support of your fellow citizens. Democracy requires participation in all the issues which affect your community - not just the issues which affect you personally. Cloaked in the anonymity of the mob, people can release their baser emotions with little fear of identification, rebuttal or confrontation. The mob has historically been the cornerstone of hate campaigns - we have seen this during the past century with the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and Hitler. Participation in the mob is shameful. And that is why those people could not step forward and identify themselves - and associate themselves with their anger and hatred. However, I believe there is nothing shameful about participation in a true democratic process. That is why I'm willing to stand up and be counted - to identify myself with a cause. And it's why I'm proud to stand here tonight and say - "My name is Sarah Forbes." r I
