Monday, June 21;'195
Present: Chairman Joseph Pasquale, Selectman Amos Robinson,
Selectman Ralph Penney, Selectman Douglas Ronald, Selectman
Dianne Royle, and Town Manager William F. Williams.
Meeting Called to Order: Chairman Joseph Pasquale called the
meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. The media was in attendance.
Motion was made by Amos Robinson and seconded by Dianne Royle to
go into Executive Session for the sole purpose of discussing
Public Safety. Roll call vote. Unanimous vote to adjourn to Ex-
ecutive Session. Meeting adjourned to Executive Session at 6:40
p.m.
Motion to adjourn Executive Session and return to Open Session
made by Amos Robinson and seconded by Dianne Royle.
Board of Selectmen return from Executive Session
Chairman Joseph Pasquale reads a prepared statement as follows:
"The Town Manager has apprised the Board of Selectmen of his
decision to suspend Mansfield Police Chief Jesse Earls without
pay based upon the indictments announced today by Attorney
General Scott Harshbarger by a Bristol County Grand Jury on
various criminal charges.
The Town Manager is invoking this suspension under Massachusetts
General Laws Chapter 268A, Section 25. The suspension will take
effect immediately."
During the period of suspension, Jesse Earls will receive no pay
or accrue any benefits. Pending the outcome of the criminal
proceedings, further action will be taken.
Town Manager Williams appoints Sgt. Arthur O'Neill as Acting
Chief of Police effective immediately. He assures all residents
of Mansfield that they can continue to rely upon their Police
Department.
Selectman Penney makes a motion to support the Town Manager's
decision. Amos Robinson seconds. Motion carries unanimous vote.
Town Manager Williams answers questions from press expressing
disappointment that the integrity tf. public;, office has been
breached and relief that a long enduwihr process is coming to a
conclusion.
