7. Public Meeting /Great Woods Performing Arts Center
John Drew, Sherman Wolf, George Hertz and other Great Woods, Inc. officials
were present; also Clarence Rich, Chairman of the Town of Norton Selectmen
and Selectman Fernandes* Mrs. Marie Brooks represented residents of the
Big E Mobile Park, many of which were also present. Clarence Rich gave each
Selectman a pamphlet prepared by Mrs. Brooks, then went on to explain the
prevalent feeling that Great Woods inception was presented as a "cultural
center ", but what they got is rock groups. Chairman McNair was also given
a petition from residents of the Big E Mobile Park, and one from other.resi-
dents of both Norton and Mansfield. *Silvia and Owens
The meeting was opened to attendees. John Sullivan, of Mansfield expressed
concern with the noise where he lives, one mile from the center, and asked
the Mansfield Selectmen to base their approval for next year's license upon
some type of objective noise criteria. Another resident raised the question
of legality of disturbing the peace.
There was discussion on drinking within the Center grounds, tailgate drink-
ing in the parking lots, litter thrown over the fences, as well as patrons
"relieving" themselves in various areas. The most frequent spoken complaint
was noise. One complaint suggested that patrons are bringing in their own
booze because of the high price for what is sold within the Center. Another
expressed the need for both Great Woods, Inc. and the Town of Mansfield to
exercise some discretion for who is invited to perform. He was assured that
the Mansfield Selectmen had vetoed five suggested performers this past year.
John Drew then addressed the concerns by saying they are all aware of the
problems which accompanied their first year and are trying very hard to cor-

rect and /or alleviate as many as possible; however, it is never possible to
make everybody happy. He said they will have a new monitoring system, but
in further discussion it became clear that the system will not have an auto-
matic cut -off, which those present felt strongly was desirable. John Drew
said the sound is a management situation which Great Woods is prepared to
handle. Mr. Drew also said the ABCC has said the Great,IWoods system for
handling drinking within the Center is laudable. Mr. Drew also presented a
5- minute tape of Channel 4's Joyce Kulhawik's appraisal of the first year,
which was complimentary. Mr. Drew reported that they had been aware of the
traffic problems, it was a learning situation in the beginning and they did
handle it better as the summer went on. Residents who complained about being
delayed for long periods of time just to get to their homes, while the park-
ing lots were being emptied, is something they will have to address further.
They plan to lengthen the fencing along the back between the Center and the
Big E Park to help to further cut down on the noise.
Mansfield Selectman Harrington said he feels John Drew was very cooperative
throughout the entire summer; Selectman D'Onofrio assured everyone that the
Board and Great Woods officials are putting into place positive steps to
ameliorate problems which all are aware of. John Drew said although the even-
ing has not been particularly pleasant, it has been worthwhile, and that he
will follow up with a letter to the Board putting in writing their plans for
addressing the problems. Chairman McNair thanked everyone for coming. The
meeting lasted two hours. .1
