4. Environmental Club Partnership Discussion (Mansfield High School)
Members of the Mansfield High School Environmental Club attended the meeting to
discuss partnership opportunities with KMB related to recycling education and
awareness within the school system.
Kick off discussion: As of Jan 2026, recycling is a formal agenda item for KMB. At past
meetings the committee agreed to the importance of supporting recycling -related
education and outreach. Tobey Ludlow agreed to lead this new initiative for KMB.
Discussion points included:
• The value of introducing recycling education early and reinforcing it throughout
the school years
• Opportunities to improve recycling practices within:
o Mansfield Public Schools
o Local restaurants and other community partners
• The Environmental Club shared an idea for a long-term "garden/plantings" project
that could be continued and passed on from class to class. Students reported they
have requested approval from school administration but have not yet received a
response. KMB suggested the club enters the new Community Roots program for
a free tree.
• KMB encouraged the students to begin with small, achievable projects and to
break larger goals into clear, manageable actions. Members recommended
presenting proposals to administration in phases, including a realistic timeline.
• KMB offered support and mentorship to the student group as they develop strategy
and next steps for their club. Our strategies align specially in the area of recycling
and education.
Questions raised:
• Whether KMB has access to recycling signage that could be used at the high
school
Next Environmental Club meeting: February 25, 2026
Action Items:
• Environmental Club students will follow up with school administration regarding
restoring and expanding recycling within the school system.
• Students will focus on achievable first steps, such as:
pg. 3
o Recycling trays in the cafeteria
o Increasing recycling bins throughout hallways and classrooms
Students will reach out to Tobey Ludlow (KMB member) for support,
particularly with planning and strategy.
5. Community Roots Program
Danielle Dupre introduced Community Roots, a new KMB program. The initiative is
scheduled to kick off in March 2026.
Action Item:
• Kelly will publish the Community Roots website pages and associated form.
6. Nip Bottle Recycling Program (Strategy Item)
Janice Wivagg suggested that nips be added as a topic for the next KMB strategy
meeting. The group discussed that while the nip program includes funding from liquor
stores, it does not appear to be improving results.
Nips remain a top item collected during KMB cleanup days.
7. Mike Healey Departure Gift
The group discussed finalizing a departure gift for Mike Healey.
Gift ideas discussed:
• Janice researched a tabletop planter shaped like a pickup truck
o The group agreed this item should be included as part of the gift
• Kelly suggested KMB pledge a group commitment of XX volunteer hours in
recognition of Mike's vision and passion
• Kara suggested making a donation to the Mansfield Food Pantry
• Group to finalize this topic when Pat is present
S. Home Depot Outreach
A Home Depot customer support representative contacted KMB via email to explore
opportunities to support KMB.
Action Item:
• Danielle will respond with partnership ideas and inquire about potential donation
of materials.
Ideas discussed included:
• Supporting a cleanup along Route 140
• Donating materials for the Community Roots program (dirt, tools, etc.)
• Assisting with construction of a fence around the JJ Garden
9. Park & Recreation Photo Contest
The group discussed reposting the Park & Recreation photo contest. Members agreed that
the contest does not align closely with the KMB mission and decided not to move
forward.
10. "We Noticed!" Program — Social Media
Kelly will post the "We Noticed!" photos and social media content.
2025 recipient: Mansfield Shredding
11. Spring Cleanup Planning — April 25, 2026
The group reviewed the Spring Cleanup planning spreadsheet and confirmed that
preparations are on track.
Discussion expanded into ideas for making the post -cleanup picnic a larger event,
potentially including fundraising.
Key discussion themes:
• One group felt the event should remain focused on thanking the community, and
that fundraising does not align with the original intent.
• Newer members felt the event could be an opportunity to fundraise.
• The group agreed the event could be expanded, but would require a dedicated
committee with clear leadership.
Outcome:
This topic was tabled until the upcoming strategy meeting.
