Ms. Tarsi-Goldfein asked if the $300,000 being set aside by means of this article would be.adequate for
uncompensated absences. Matt said he believes it is as typically they move about $200,000, but this
year the reserve is unusually low.
Mr. Martin asked how much new uncompensated time is owed, and if there is a forced reduction, will
$300,000 be enough? Mr. Feely noted that generally when forced reduction is needed it is the
employees who were last hired who are the first to be let go. Therefore, those employees would have
the ►east amount of liability.
Mr. Martin asked, what do most other towns do to cover their liability for uncompensated absences.
Mr. Violette stated that he used to see many methods when he was an auditor. He added, some would
cover from their budget. He said he is unaware of any communities that have full amount sitting aside
for uncompensated absences. Mr. Martin followed up by asking, where do we compare to other
towns? Mr. Violette stated that Mansfield is in a better position than many because Mansfield actually
sets something aside. Other towns rely on Finance Committee transfers. Mr. Violette noted that the
amount ($300,000) in this article was just for the Town, as the schools are covered in their budget.
