3. Discussion for increasing composting in town and schools
Rosie from Black Earth gave a general overview of the work Black Earth performs on
composting. A lot of waste is being exported to New Hampshire. Rosie reviewed various
aspects of composting and why we should compost.
Roughly 47% of waste is compostable.
Black Earth is a full -service composter and processor creating rich soils.
Mansfield is about half way to the next price point with approximately 97 active
residents in the program.
Schools are a great way to get the word out to promote composting. Black Earth
has a lot of media materials to share if needed. Mike Healy suggested for Black
Earth to set up at Family Fun Night to promote their program. The cost is
approximately $180 per year and next price drop will be required after another 100
residents sign up to join the program.
Dawn Langtry from the schools joined the conversation and spoke about school system and
composting that are presently no reachable. Mike Ahern mentioned that schools are on a fixed
cost for trash pick up and not part of the tipping fee so savings for the schools would be minimal.
Schools would be more advantageous to promote through classes and education.
