• Interview Leonard Epstein and Charles Cullinan for the Board of Library Trustees
Ms. Mallon and Ms. Brown introduced themselves and then Ms. Mallon gave a summary of the library and
the items that the Board of Library Trustees is responsible for including the annual review of the Library
Director, reviewing policies and reviewing reports and data of the library usage,
Mr. DelVecchio stated that this is a difficult task because there are two applicants for one vacancy. Mr.
Aptowitz asked Mr. Cullinan to share a little bit about himself. Mr. Cullinan responded that he has lived in
Town twenty-eight years and has been using the library and he is familiar with how libraries are run
because many of his friends are librarians. Mr. Epstein was asked to share about himself. He stated that
him and his wife moved to Mansfield after he retired and has been on the Board of Library Trustees for
many years and is the Secretary taking the minutes. Mr. Aptowitz then asked Mr. Epstein what attracted
him to serve on the Board and Mr. Epstein stated he was at the library often and got to know the staff who
encouraged him to apply and it was a way to give back to the Town. Mr. Cullinan responded that he was a
frequent user of the library and his background and experience. Mr. Aptowitz then asked him what his
strongest attribute was and he responded that it was his background and experience and knows his way
around the library and he also knows how much of an asset the library is for communities. Mr. Epstein
responded that it was very similar to Mr. Cullinan and when he was practicing law he referred to the
library often and he was interested in the library. Lastly Mr. Aptowitz asked if there were any conflicts that
they could have and Mr. Epstein responded that there has not been and would recuse myself. Mr. Cullinan
responded that he could see a conflict if he worked fora publisher but he does not. Mr. Aptowitz then
Mr. Aptowitz began the discussion stating the meeting was being recorded. Mr. DelVecchio stated that
there are three candidates for two positions. Mr. Aptowitz asked Mr. Eagle to tell everyone a little bit
about himself. Mr. Eagle stated that he moved to Mansfield in 2010 and decided to get involved and it
took a few times of applying to get a seat on the Finance Committee, Mr. DelVecchio noted that it is not
uncommon for people to have to apply more than once. Mr. Eagle stated that he has been on the Finance
Committee for six years and has a good understanding of the Town's finances. Mr. Aptowitz asked Ms.
Thurston to tell everyone about herself. Ms. Thurston responded that she is a newer resident, she moved
here from Colorado to go to Suffolk College, which she graduated in 2022. She added that her degree is in
Economics and Political Science. She stated that she works for a cyber security for intelligence company
and teaches horse back riding. Mr. Aptowitz then asked her what attracted her to apply and she
responded that she wanted to get involved and apply for a committee that she was interested in and the
Finance Committee came in at the top of her list. She stated that she does not have municipal finance
experience but wants to learn more and bring her education experience to the Committee. Mr. DelVecchio
commended both of them for applying when many people say they are too busy. Mr. Eagle answered the
question stated that this is one of the ways he can give back and by serving on a committee it gives him
more of a right to complain. Mr. Aptowitz then asked Mr. Eagle what his strongest attribute was that he
brings to the Finance Committee and Mr. Eagle responded that his ability to think critically and finding
solutions where everyone can come together and compromise. Ms. Thurston responded that her.
strongest attribute was that she brings a new fresh perspective and that she wants to also represents all
demographics within Mansfield. Mr. DelVecchio then stated that they have one additional interview and
then on January WI the full Select Board will discuss and appoint members.
