Currently focusing on non-discrimination, discipline, special education stabilization fund, and section D (finance.) New Business: Mansfield Fire Department SAFE Grant Update: Lieutenant Ryan Brousseau provided a bit of background on the work that the fire department does to educate our students and families. Ryan is working toward rebranding how the department delivers information including a migration back to in -person training. Some of the programs discussed were: Redesigned and Updated Programs Pre-K — FF Community Helpers, Fire Engine demo K — FF Community Helpers (Re -enforce), 911 basics, Tower ladder demo I`— Safe play - Tools vs Toys, stop drop roll 2"d — smoke alarms, stay low and go, stay out, 911 3rd — home escape plan review 4' — Hunt for Home Hazards 5t6 — Kitchen/Cooking Safety, escape SAFE trailer 6' — Science of Fire and Tobacco Programs in development High School COPE — opioid awareness Vape awareness, dangers of vaping Lynn Cavicchi asked if this information is also shared with parents so they can reinforce what the students are taught. Ryan appreciated this feedback and will work on that. She also suggested using MESA as an avenue to reach parents. Teresa Murphy asked how much money the department typically receives. The grant base amount is $4600 then based on availability there can be more added. Consideration of Performing Arts Field Trip to New York City: MHS Principal Russ Booth and Performing Arts Department Chair Sheila Newton presented a request for the choir, dance and orchestra to go to NYC for a 2-day / 1-night stay where the students will attend a Broadway production, participate in a backstage tour, and engage in workshops. Additional time will be spent in a small section of Times Square. This is a great opportunity for our performing arts students. The trip will take place during April vacation, travel will be by coach bus and there will be a tour guide with the group for the entire trip. Questions/Answers: Jenn Walsh asked what show they would see. Sheila noted that the students are provided with a short list from which they choose. Sheila will keep the committee informed of the decision. Kiera O'Neil noted that they have quite a bit packed into two days. Sheila agreed and said the students should have a great time. Lynn Cavicchi agreed with the high level of activity but noted that the cost is a concern. She suggested that it would be helpful to see a year long plan of what the Performing Arts Department intends to run for trips and activities rather than have the committee see things bit by bit. Sheila noted that they are working toward fundraising and developing a field trip fund for scholarship opportunities. The biggest increase in cost this field trip is due to the Page 4 of 8 Approved 12-13-22 Mansfield School Committee Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, November 15, 2022 In Person & Virtual Meeting using GoToWebinar master classes. She suggested that the students could opt for a less expensive event such as the new Broadway museum but she would like to let the students decide. Sheila also noted that chaperones will pay their own way to help keep student cost down. Lynn reminded Sheila to offer financial aid and keep costs in mind. Lauren asked a couple of specifics related to "flexible expenses" and requested that Sheila inform parents at the initial meetings that there is a base cost but some additions may occur. Page 6 of 8 Approved 12-13-22 Mansfield School Committee Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, November 15, 2022 In Person & Virtual Meeting using GoToWebinar Consideration of revised 5-year UP Plan: In August, the district came to school committee for Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Town Meeting Priorities. Since that time The Assistant Town Manager Barry LaCasse has requested that we expand our scope out S years. Ed Donoghue reviewed the plan with the committee. Kiera asked whether or not we had worked on the elevators and MHS lockers recently. Ed will get back to the committee. Lynn noted that we need to be careful of future playground enhancements as changes to the playground may required its to bring the entire playground up to code which would increase costs. Kiera asked how ►ong we think we will need to work on lighting. Ed noted that it is an extremely long and tedious project as we are replacing every single light in the district. Robinson is complete; Jordan/Jackson is almost complete and QMS has been started. We anticipate several more years. Kiera noted that spreading this out may be beneficial in future years when replacements are needed; we would not be able to replace all at once. It was also noted that priorities may change when we receive results of the education study.
