HomeMy WebLinkAboutRabies - 1998Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute Infectious Disease Laboratories Division Rabies Summary Division August, 1998 Of the record 616 specimens received by the laboratory this month, 76 were positive for rabies virus. These animals were from 55 towns in 11 counties and included 46 skunks, 19 raccoons, 5 bats, 4 cats, and 2 woodchucks. Animals submitted from Norfolk County accounted for 21 of the 76 positive animals (27.6%). A positive raccoon from Ashfield in Franklin County is the first positive submission from this town since the start of the epizootic in 1992. This is the first new town to submit a positive animal since May1996. Twenty-five human and 88 animal exposures resulted from encounters with the positive animals. The cat from Canton was not vaccinated, while the vaccination status of the stray rabid cats from Templeton, Fitchburg, and Medway were unknown. Strain typing was completed for all positive skunks and woodchucks from June and July with the exception of five skunks with insufficient specimen remaining after testing. Six positive skunks from early August as well as a woodchuck from Hanson and a cat from Templeton were determined to have the raccoon strain of rabies virus; results are pending for the remaining positive animals from August. The positive animals were distributed throughout the state, with seven or more positive specimens submitted from six different counties. The brain from a kitten from Beverly was formalin-fixed, precluding testing onsite. The CDC in Atlanta was able to test this specimen and reported it to be positive. Brain samples from the mother cat as well as two littermates were tested at MA SLI and found to be negative. Thirty-four human and eighty-one animal exposures resulted from encounters with the rabies positive animals. The vaccination status of both positive cats was unknown. Strain typing was completed for all animals with results pending from August with the exception of nine skunks with insufficient specimen remaining after testing. The animals from August, as well as thirty-two positive skunks from the first half of September, a woodchuck from Berkley, and a fox from Holyoke were determined to have the raccoon strain of rabies virus; results are pending for the remaining positive animals from September.
