Former Gorham Silver Facility Site 340 South Main Street Mansfield, Massachusetts Reminder: Board of Health Private Well Ban Requirements Prior to Seasonal Irrigation Use In 1991, the Mansfield Board of Health instituted a private well ban in the Leonard Street area west and southwest of the former Gorham Silver site located at 340 South Main Street. Since 1997, the Mansfield Board of Health has allowed the use of existing wells in that area for irrigation purposes, such as car washing and lawn watering, provided certain procedures are followed by property owners each year before using their well. This information sheet is intended to remind residents of those requirements. Background The 340 South Main Street property is currently owned and operated by the CrossPointe Church. From the 1950s to 1985, the property was used for silver plating operations. In 1990, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) typically used for degreasing metals were found in groundwater at the former Gorham Silver Facility property. In 1991, VOCs were also detected in certain private wells west and southwest of the property. Based on the results of the private well testing, the Mansfield Board of Health banned the use of all private drinking water wells and select irrigation wells in the area. In 1997, a Comprehensive Site Assessment of the former Gorham Silver Facility site found that use of the then existent private irrigation wells in the area for irrigation purposes such as lawn watering or car washing does not pose a risk to human health. Therefore, the Mansfield Board of Health decided that the ban on the use of the wells in the area for irrigation can be modified to allow for such use, but only if certain procedures are followed. Procedures for Irrigation Well Use The Mansfield Board of Health requires that private well sampling be performed each year prior to the first use of the irrigation well. If a resident desires to use their irrigation well, they first need to contact the Mansfield Health Agent, agree to use the well for specified irrigation purposes only and participate in the required sampling and evaluation program to confirm that irrigation well use continues not to pose a risk to human health. This sampling program is administered by Textron at no cost to the irrigation well owner and is implemented through their agent, AECOM Technical Services, Inc. (AECOM) with oversight by one of AECOM's Massachusetts Licensed Site Professionals. Residents should contact Amy Donovan -Palmer, the Town of Mansfield Health Agent, at 508.261.7366 or Melissa Cannon, the AECOM project manager, at 978.400.1213. Results from the sampling of a resident's well will be made available to that resident within 30 days of the date of the sampling. For More Information If you have additional questions or wish to have your irrigation well tested, you may write or call Amy Donovan -Palmer, the Mansfield Health Agent, at 508.261.7366.
