Community Update #2
July 2002
Mansfield, MA
Preliminary Site Testing Completed
EPA completed preliminary site testing of ground water
from beneath the site as well as sediment and surface water
from the Rumford River, Fulton Pond and Glue Factory
Pond. Testing was conducted during the fall of 2001.
Ten surface water samples were collected from the
Rumford River between Fulton Pond and Glue Factory
Pond. A total of 34 sediment samples were also collected
from 19 locations in the Rumford River. Over 300
individual laboratory tests were performed on these
samples. Testing was performed for contaminants that are
suspected to be present or were detected in prior sampling investigations.

Ground water testing was also performed using ground water monitoring wells that were previously installed
on the Site property. Samples were obtained from 15 wells on the site. Each sample was shipped to an off -
site laboratory and tested for over 100 different chemicals, including those suspected or known to be present at
the site.

A wetlands and wildlife survey was also
completed to determine what type of
organisms and plants might be affected
by site contamination. A vernal pool
survey was also conducted to determine if
there were any of these sensitive habitats
in the wetlands and forest on the site.
An inspection of the site was conducted
to evaluate the need for additional safety
measures at the site to protect neighbors
from dust and to discourage trespassers
from entering the site.

Preliminary Site Testing Results
The figure above summarizes the findings of the preliminary testing performed by EPA.
• Soil contaminated with arsenic and pentachlorophenol (PCP) is located in the areas where wood was
treated, dried and stored. This contamination is currently covered with asphalt or gravel to prevent dust
and to eliminate contact by trespassers.
• A plume of contaminated ground water containing arsenic and PCP extends from the former process area
to the Rumford River.
• The sediments of the Rumford River contain elevated concentrations of arsenic, dioxin, lead and PCP.
Elevated concentrations of lead are also present in the sediment of the Rumford River upstream and
downstream of the site, and may not be site related.
• Surface water at the site contains elevated concentrations of PCP
The study also found that there are eight vernal pools on the site. Vernal pools are potentially important habitats
for certain organisms. Testing results of sediment and surface water from two of these vernal pools will be
available soon.
The results of this testing program were recently compiled into a Data Report. A copy of this report is available
for review at the Mansfield Public Library. A copy of the Report on compact disk can also be obtained from EPA
upon request.

Community Update #2 July 2002 Mansfield, MA
This fall, EPA will begin conducting a Remedial
Investigation at the site to determine the nature and
extent of contamination at the site. Two phases of
field work are anticipated (fall 2002, spring 2003) and
the final report should be ready in the spring of 2004.
The Remedial Investigation will include sampling of
soil, ground water, sediment and surface water at the
site, and will contain an assessment of the projected
risks to human health and the environment. A reuse
assessment of the site will also be conducted to
determine the most likely future use of the site after
cleanup is completed.
The Remedial Investigation will be followed by a
Feasibility Study to determine the best strategy for
cleaning up the site.

EPA asked the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to investigate public health concerns
related to the Hatheway & Patterson Superfund Site. This request is routinely made at new and proposed
Superfund Sites to evaluate whether there are any existing public health hazards. The Public Health Assessment
will be conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Health, on behalf of ATSDR. ATSDR and Massachusetts
Department of Health officials have visited the site and nearby surroundings, and have begun their analysis.
A Public Health Assessment gathers available information about hazardous substances at a site and evaluates
whether exposure to the substances might cause harm to people. ATSDR will conduct their study using existing
site testing data, including the most recent test results from EPA, community concerns, and health outcome data.
The Public Health Assessment is a mechanism to respond to community health concerns associated with human
exposure to hazardous substances at a site.
Internet users may access general
Superfund information on EPA's
Superfund web page at:

The ATSDR study is scheduled to be completed by fall
2002, and will be released to the public. You may contact
the Massachusetts Department of Health (Rebecca A.
Robateau) at (617) 624-5757 if you have any comments or
concerns about the Public Health Assessment.
