Dear Commissioner Cortese;
The Mansfield Conservation Commission requests your review of
the Hathaway and Patterson Co., Inc. correspondence with DEQE
in Lakeville regarding the oil contamination cleanup in the
vicinity of the Rumford River. This contamination has existed
in the Town of Mansfield since the early 1970's, and the DEQE
has been involved since 1975. After reviewing our file and the
latest correspondence, there appears to be an inadequacy in the
response on the part of Hathaway and Patterson regarding the
recovery operation and a recurrent lack of iniative on DEQE's
part to resolve the problem.
It would be most beneficial to the Town of Mansfield if the DEQE,
a representative from Hathaway and Patterson, and the Mansfield
Board of Health and Conservation Commission could meet jointly
to discuss this on -going problem. We look forward to hearing
from you and setting up a date for a joint meeting,
