Dear Fir, Rips: -
This letter is an interim report on our efforts relative to the oil contamina-
tion problem in the vacinity of the Rumford River in Mansfield.
Daily monitoring of oil seepage at location A3 (see our engineer's report) has
proceeded normally. The amount of oil removed at this location has been very
minimal, ie, less than 1-2 gallons per month. We still feel that seepage at
this location is a result of vandalism which occurred to our previously installed
collection equipment at this location prior to 1975.
In the daily monitoring of our old recovery pits we have observed no oils except
a"very light "rainbow" film at the pit adjacent to test location T-2,
X We intend to run a test pumping/recharge operation at that recovery pit adjacent
to :'2 as soon as electric power can be provided at the site. (Our attempts to
secure approval by Conrail officials to bring power lines under their tracks
have met with a lack of any response'If no response can be gained soon, we will
k`take appropriate action'to get the power in and then deal with their complaints
if and when they arise,)
'de have undertaken to clear out some of the trees and brash in the area so that
excavation work can be accomplished ;ith little interference or generation of
undue surface scars and debris,
b,e have been in contact with Mansfield to,r-n officials regarding the future of
this site such that future use be compatible with any protracted residual con-
tamination and its clean-up.
e are still reluctant to place a number on the total volume of recoverable oils,
but based on current observations, we would guess at a number around 250 gallons
spread out over an area of about one acre.

7. Like many other businesses, we are finding the general economic conditions to
be very poor, and this fact has diverted some of the attention of our manage-
ment from this problem to the problem of marketing and production cost control.
As a result, our progress has not been as rapid as we expected. I dislike having
to make this excuse and ask that you be assured of our overall commitment to
doing as much as possible to address this contamination problem.
Please contact me if I can provide any additional information or take additional
action to this matter,
Yours
Dveerry truly,
