Dear Mr. Ripa:-
This letter is an interim report on our efforts relative to the oil
contamination problem in the vicinity of the Rumford River in Mansfield.
Having recently provided electrical power at the site, we have installed
a ground water depression trap at location T-2 which has historically
been the location where the greatest amounts of oils have been observed.
During the interval of May 28 to June 9th we pumptwater out at the rate
of 2000 gallons per hour. As you will recall, this as an interval of
unusually heavy rains such -at our pump was running at full capacity
most of the time. Oils that were drawn into the tap were removed with
absorbants, carefully separted from Nater and measured in a graduated
cylinder. The total amount of oil recovered for this entire interval
was only 343 milliliters.
We intendE to leave this set-up operating continuously, although the
well will have to be deeper to be effective as the water table under-
goes its seasonal drop.
Based on the results of this effort we do not expect any dramatic re-
sults, and-anticipate_a protracted program to recover any sustantial
amounts of oil.
Please contact me if I can provide any additional information or take
additional action in this matter.
