No. 360300-03 August 21, 1990 Mr. Marcel Boelitz The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Southeast Region Lakeville Hospital Lakeville, MA 02347 Dear Marcel: Re: Hatheway and Patterson Site Number 4-0571 On July 26, 1990, Keystone Environmental Resources, Inc., on behalf of Hatheway and Patterson Company, Inc., submitted the 'Preliminary Design Report for the Short Term Measure:' Due to the absence of groundwater contours in the immediate vicinity of the river bank where a floating material periodically (typically after heavy rainfall events) discharges to the Rumford River, Hatheway and Patterson has agreed to a limited field investigation. The purpose of this investigation is to identify the extent of affected soils along the river bank and to complete the groundwater contours to the river's edge. The results of the assessment will facilitate the finalization of the design of the Short Term Measure barrier and collection system. As requested in MA DEP" s 7/5/90 correspondence, Keystone is presently arranging to have a soil sample collected from the visibly stained area along the bank of the Rumford River. Details pertaining to the sampling and analytical work are outlined in Keystone's 8/15/90 correspondence. Keystone proposes to perform six soil borings along the Rumford River where seepage has been observed. These borings will be spaced on approximately twenty foot centers from the center of the seepage in both upstream and downstream directions. These borings will be drilled to a maximum depth of feet below the groundwater surface or to below any stained soil, whichever is deepest. Soil samples will be collected continuously with split spoon samplers to determine the extent of potential horizontal and vertical contamination. Soil samples will be field classified according to the Unified Soil Classification system. Evidence of visible and odoKous contamination will be noted on the lithologic logs.
