Pacheco Fall River, MA 02720 RE: 24 County Street Dear Mr. Pacheco, Please be advised that the above referenced location is directly across the street from the site of the former Hatheway and Patterson Company, a wood treatment facility. The site had been the location of a company that applied a variety of preservatives to wood products from 1953 to 1993. The wood products were dipped into chemical preservatives and stored on the ground. Eventually, "drip pads" were used in an attempt to recapture the chemicals. It is these areas that have become contaminated with copper chromium arsenate, among other chemicals. Distant areas of the site are contaminated with significant amounts of fuel oil. In August 1995, the United States Environmental Protection Agency completed a $1.4 million cleanup which removed more than 120,000 gallons of chemicals and nearly 300 drums for sludge and other hazardous chemicals from the site. At the end of that cleanup, the EPA also stabilized the site by paving areas to prevent migration of chemicals to the groundwater through leaching by rain and snowmelt. The site was nominated, by Governor Paul Cellucci, to the EPA National Priorities List of Superfund sites on May 8, 2000. The site is also under planned remediation as a Brownfields Initiative The Town of Mansfield provides municipal water to its residents, so that potable water from a private well is not a concern at that address.
