Re: Hatheway-Patterson
Date: MayS, 1999 ',' tJ
I have been contacted by Gerard Martin of the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection regarding the Town's position in the following matter:
The Brownfields initiative at the Hatheway-Patterson will address human contact with
chemicals in the soil at the site. It will not, however, address the groundwater pollution
associated with chemicals from the site.
The remediation of the groundwater problem is a larger and therefore more expensive
problem than the state [alone] can accommodate. Therefore, the MADEP is considering
requesting that the Untied States Environmental Protection Agency list the above
referenced site on the National Priority List.
The listing would enable federal resources to be used in the cleanup of the site. As some
communities are sensitive to appearing on the list, MADEP would like to know the
Town's feeling in this matter.
My opinion is that the cleanup of the site should be the first and foremost consideration.
