McCarter Vice Chairman, Board of Selectmen Mansfield Town Hall 6 Park Row Mansfield, MA 02048 Re: Diesel FuelRelease I-95 Northbound Rest Stop Mansfield, Massachusetts DEP Release Tracking Number: 4-19969 Dear Mr. McCarter: 06 2006 A release of an estimated seventy gallons of diesel fuel occurred to paved and grassed areas at the edge of the truck parking area of the I-95 northbound rest stop in Mansfield, Massachusetts and has resulted in Immediate Response Actions being undertaken. This letter has been prepared in accordance with the public notification requirements of 310 CMR 40.1403 to provide your office with notification of the release and a brief summary of the remedial activities to date, and to inform you that WAS Brothers Trucking, Inc, has retained Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (CHES) to conduct response actions at the site. The release occurred on August 3, 2006, when a piece of metal on the highway tore a fuel line underneath a track. The driver pulled into the rest stop, where diesel fuel from the torn line impacted the edge of the parking lot, a catch basin, and soils adjacent to and under the edge of the pavement. On August 3, 2006, CHS performed remedial activities including cleaning the impacted pavement and catch basin, and removing impacted soils from the shoulder adjacent to the parking lot. Visual and analytical evidence indicates that additional impacted soil is located below the curbing and parking lot. The removal of additional soils from beneath these structures, and confirmatory soil sampling, will be performed once the necessary permits for the work have been approved.
