remedial activities associated with RTN 4-18634.
Planned remedial activities will include the continued monitoring and sampling of groundwater
in/around the station facility. Remedial monitoring activities began in August 2005 and will
continue until concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in this aquifer decrease.
A copy of the Phase III RAP Report, as well as other applicable documents pertaining to the
subject site, is available for review at the MassDEP Southeast Regional Office located at 20

Re: Availability & Summary of Phase II CSA Report
Former Shell -branded Gasoline Station
54 Chauncy Street
Mansfield, Massachusetts
MassDEP RTN 4-18634
To Whom It May Concern:
In accordance with the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) 310 CMR 40.1403 (3)(e), this
correspondence serves as notification that a Phase II Comprehensive Site Assessment Report
was submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for
the above -referenced location (the disposal site).
The following summarizes the conclusions of the report:
1. The facility is an active Exxon -branded (formally Shell -branded) gasoline and
automotive service station located at 54 Chauncy Street; at the intersection of Chauncy
Street and North Main Street in Mansfield, Massachusetts. The facility consist of a
single -story station building with a small convenience store are, restrooms, an office
area and three automobile service bays located on a 12, 295 square foot lot. The facility
is located in a mix commercial/retail and residential area of Mansfield, Massachusetts.
2. The source of the petroleum -related impacts at the disposal site related to RTN 4-18634
is the former floor drains, floor drain trap and once existing oil/water separator. The
majority of impacted soil in the source area was removed during RAM activities in 2004.
Based on data collected since 2004, COC concentrations are exhibiting an overall
decreasing trend. There are no known continuing sources.
3. Groundwater impacts above applicable GW-2 and GW-3 standards at the disposal site
are limited to petroleum related compounds associated with floor drains and the former
oil water separator. The most recent groundwater sampling conducted on June 13, 2007
documents only one monitoring well, MW-302, with COCs, but not above applicable
Method 1 GW-2 and GW-3 standards. Well MW-507 in the center former oil water
separator excavation has historically been documented to contain trace LNAPL The
depth to groundwater at the disposal site is approximately 8 to 10 feet bgs.
905B S. Main Street, Unit 202 • Mansfield, MA 02048 • Tel: 508-339-3200 • Fax: 508-339-3248
4. The closest surface water body is a stream associated with Fulton Pond located
approximately 0.2 miles southwest of the site. Given the limited extent of COC
concentrations within the overburden aquifer, discharge of COCs to surface water or
ecological receptors is not likely.
5. Soil vapor, surface water, or sediment impacts at this disposal site were not identified.
Sovereign investigated GW-2 exceedances in accordance with methods acceptable to
MassDEP published guidelines.
6. The primary migration pathway for petroleum released to the subsurface is determined
to be via groundwater flow. Based on contaminant distribution documented at the site,
concentrations of COCs in groundwater above applicable standards have migrated
minimally, due likely to the lack of a significant vertical or horizontal hydraulic
gradients. Subsurface utilities or subsurface man-made objects are not expected to
provide a preferential migratory pathway for concentrations of dissolved -phase
hydrocarbons.
7. Based on current data, SRM, CEP, of IH conditions were not identified at the disposal
site.
8. There are no potential exposures to soil impacts at the disposal site based on an existing
AUL for RTN 4-11144 which restricts access and exposure potential. Petroleum impacts
related to RTN 4-18634 are limited to the facility boundaries, within the limits of an
existing AUL.
9. A condition of "no significant risk', as defined by the MCP, does not exist at the site
based upon a comparison of current soil and groundwater concentrations with
applicable MCP standards (i.e., Method 1). As such, additional response actions are
required.
A copy of the Phase II CSA Report, as well as other applicable documents pertaining to the
subject site, is available for review at the MassDEP Southeast Regional Office located at 20
Riverside Drive, Lakeside, MA 02347.
