A meeting of the Mansfield School Committee was opened and called to order at 11:09 a.m. SC Members Present: Lynn Cavicchi, Linda Fernando, Lauren Scher SAC Members Present: Greta Hobbs, Ethan Bruce, Karine Ayoub, Caitlyn Zajac, Lulu Cavicchi Others present: Mary Watkins, MHS Principal; Teresa Murphy, Superintendent Introductions: Mary Watkins led off with welcome remarks and introductions and gave an overview of the agenda. Lynn Cavicchi reviewed the role of the school committee and the role of the student advisory committee including references to State Law requiring the creation of this committee. Student Input: • The hybrid has started to seem "normal." • Going from remote to hybrid, back to remote and back to hybrid has been difficult. While at home, students found it difficult to communicate with staff when there were technical issues. • Those students who are fully remote have noted that they prefer the fully remote schedule over the hybrid schedule. • Students really like the directed study option on Wednesdays. They find this one -on-one time with staff to be very beneficial. • One challenge is the number of emails that must be read for Google Classrooms. • Students noted that there are challenges on during the days at home. At home interaction is inconsistent from class to class. Some teachers check in at the beginning of the class while others keep the camera on throughout the class. • Students talked about the many things they miss while not in school. Mary Watkins noted that from an administrative point of view even the smallest problems can be a big drain on time. There are no templates for solving these new challenges and everyday there seems to be something new. The group discussed the attendance policy and the problems it creates for students who are forced to quarantine at home. Mary Watkins asked the students to consider ways to build community. The next meeting is scheduled for 12-16-20. Motion made to adjourn by Linda Fernando, seconded by Lauren Scher (3-0).
