Reducing Solid Waste -
In-depth discussion ensues about ways to reduce the solid waste in Mansfield; includes talk of
different facebook groups for getting rid of different items which can be donated or reused; ideas
about reducing solid waste and how families can do same; many different ways discussed;
Most important COMMUNICATION & EDUCATION & RE -USE; have to get the information
out to residents regarding reducing solid waste (trash) and ways to re -use
Need to suggest and show tangible, convenient ways to do things differently, which will help
with reducing solid waste and clean-up the recycling
Kathy would like a metrics system for each suggestion / option so that everyone can easily see
the benefits or the non -benefits of each option and why the committee feels one way is more
beneficial than the other option
Committee agrees that if it comes down to a couple different trash/recycling options it would be
beneficial to have a public hearing and get resident input
Also committee agrees to obtain and review the records of solid waste tonnage, recycling, bulky
item, white goods, etc.
Would like to compare what gets recycled at the green to what gets recycled curbside and the
financial difference; also breakdown of the pink bag textile program to see if that has reduced the
solid waste collection amount here in Mansfield
In depth discussion about the Green and ways to make it better and things that maybe could be
added such as a Swap Shed; maybe make it more convenient to get stickers and compost bins
there; also track how much glass, cardboard, etc. gets recycled there and the cost to get rid of
same; Mike has money in his budget in the next fiscal year to have someone come out and help
prepare an optimized plan for the recycle park
Committee agrees that have to start the communication plan NOW; Christina will reach out to
Jessica and start that process and get some samples of what she does, etc.; also start social media
communication effort; see how Jessica handles this and what her plan would look like; get
samples of how that would look
Also it is agreed to look into applying for the recycling grant which Kathy Mirza outlined in
detail when she was at the meeting; it includes a whole time line of events and mailings etc.,
which would lead up to the actual visible inspection of recycling carts here in Mansfield in order
to make Mansfield's recycling cleaner;
Brief discussion about the upcoming hazardous waste day on May 2Id; it will be held at the
Xfinity Center and Mansfield will be partnering with Norton; still lots of details to work out with
Norton on how it will work and if it will be able to be done in the fall and spring moving forward
Take away from the meeting and actions which will be taken:
- Christina is going to reach out to Waste Management about the new stickers that are on
the recycling bins that are delivered now, which show what shouldn't go into the recycle
cart; inquire as to whether or not we can get some made for the existing recycle carts here
in Mansfield and maybe have them applied to those carts;
Start creating a metrics of information tracking almost everything such as solid waste
tonnage; recycling; simple recycling, bulky items, white good items; etc.; also, keep track
of number of carts here and how the tonnage relates to the breakdown of carts;
Christina will also reach out to Jessica and get that started and get Jessica's
recommendations on how the program would look and work; start things with her so that
COMMUNICATION with residents can start ASAP;
- Christina and Mike will look into how many composting bins we have currently and how
long it will take to get some more in stock; Mike will look into a location to store more of
them at the green and will start accepting checks for them at the Green also to make it
more convenient for residents who want them;
- Also, Neil Rhein will review the Town's bylaws, along with the surrounding areas by-
laws for a future discussion of same at an upcoming meeting
