REPORT
OF THE
SCIIOOL ColgMI'1'°IEE
i
OP THE
TOWN OF MANSFIELD,
€ FOR1872.
s
REPORT.
TO THE CITIZENS OF THE TOWN OF. MANSFIELD : —
Iu accordance with the requirements of law, tl
Committee submit their annual report of the conditi
schools to the inhabitants of the town.
SCHOOLS.
In some of the schools perhaps there has been
degree of progress than in others; in all, we be
progress has been apparent, and commendable alike
ers and scholars. And we have reason for saying
schools have been the past year in as healthy and p
a condition as ever before.
TEACHERS.
The school' in District No. 1' was taught by M
summer term, and Miss Hallett, winter term; that
by Miss Goward, both summer and winter terms; i
No. 3, Miss Marion Bailey, summer term, M!
Bailey, winter term; District No. 4, Misses'Hewin
and Sherman, slimmer term, Misses Hewins Horr,'.
Blake, winter' term; in District No. 5, Misses 9
Dunham, slimmer term, Misses Mansfield and Ha
" ter term; District No. 6, Miss Shepard has taughti
>= mer and winter terms; District No. 7, Miss Sweet
both summer and winter terms; District No. 8, M
Bailey taught the summer term, and Miss Louise D
winter term.'
76
All the teachers are entitled to praise for the faithful and
effectual manner in which they have discharged their duties,
and the School Committee feel justified in accordingthe same
to them. It is not to be expected of any teacher that she can
give Pei -feet satisfaction to all the members of the district in
which she teaches, but we believe that the teachers of the
past year have come as near doing it as is practicable, or even
advisable.'
PUNCTUALITY.
The great annoyance to the teacher, and great hindrance
to the advance of the school, is the want of punctuality on
the part the scholars, and very often for this the parents
alone are to blame. Upon some frivolous pretext, the chil-
dren are allowed to absent themselves from school fora day, or
Bart of a day, or not allowed to start for the school -house in
season to be in their seats at the ringing of the bell, disturb
imp the whole school by their late arrival, disarranging the
classes by their needless absence, and, in our judgment, ma
aerially obstructing the progress of the school, and it is hoped
by the Committee that the parents of school children will see
to it that their children are not detained at home except upon
unavoidable necessity.
SCHOOL -BOOKS.
No change has been made during the past year in the text-
books. Achange would be desirable in Grammar, Readers,
and Geographies, but the School Committee have not as yet
examined any books in these departments sufficiently superior
to the ones now in use, to warrant change. A change of
text -Books is attended with considerable expense to the town,:
and the School Committee should not, in our opinion, make
such a change, unless the advantage derived therefrom makes
the change a good pecuniary investment for the town.
77
HIGH SCHOOL.
As the room hired by the town for High School purposes
has not been completed; it was deemed advisable to com-
mence it in the Centro District School -house, and the consent
of the District having been obtained, John H. Berry, tell. -
and favorably known as a teacher in this town, was employed
as teacher, and on the fourth Monday of January the school
was commenced, with nearly fifty pupils, and it is now in a
prosperous condition. It is expected that the room in the
Uuitariau Church will be ready for the school by the first of
March next, and as it will be far better adapted to the wants of
the school, the Committee, teacher and sehblars will hail the
tidings of its completion with great satisfaction.
CONSOLIDATION.
If the citizens of District No. 7 and 8 could be prevailed
upon to unite the two districts, and erect a pleasant and at-
tractive school -house, in some convenient location, in 'place
of the present repulsive, ill -contrived, and dilapidated hovels
which are now used for school purposes, and which are a
disgrace to the districts and the town, we are confident it
would prove a great blessing to all, and as a financial 'opera-
tion it would yield' most satisfactory dividends.
APPROPRIATION.
It is for the interest of all the citizens of the town that it
should increase in valuation and in population. The last few
years the business of the place has increased, and they have
been years marked by a prosperity and growth before on -
known. One of the most attractive features of a town is
good schools, and strangers looking for a residence, or desir-
ing to locate a business, will choose, other things being equal,
the vilh+ge or town which has the most schooling., Our
schools have never kept longer than just the term required
78
by law. It might, with justice, be thought by s
all the citizens desired was to evade the penalty(
requiring the schools kept six months in each ye
not believe that this opinion would be correct
believe that the District schools should be kept
months in each year, that the town may hold as
in educational matters and facilities as it now i
ness enterprises ; and we therefore would most ea
for an advanced appropriation for school purpos
other way can the desired lengthened term be o
CO-OPERATION.
The School Committee would acknowledge w
the suggestions made, and timely assistance ren
parents of the scholars to the Committee, and ea
that in this town the parents, teachers, scholars'.
tee may always be found working together, as w
that in no other way can the prosperity of the si
town be secured.
