Conservation Meeting
November 17, 2008
Present: Joseph Mulkern, Chair; Paul Boyden, Vice Chair; Jack Smith; Carole Matthew;
Linda Falk; Derek House; Michele Grenier, Conservation and Environmental Planner.
1.1. Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm.
I 2. Discussion with Earl Mason: Memorial at Maple Street Conservation Land.
Earl Mason and Kevin McNatt of the Mansfield Historical Society and John Hogan,
Mansfield's Veteran Agent were present.
Mr. Mason would like to re-name Maple Street Park in honor of Korean War Gold Star
Veteran Corporal Robert Francis Hardy. Mr. Hardy was a life long resident of Mansfield
and was the only Mansfield resident to have lost his life in the Korean War.
It was thought that Mr. Hardy had never been recognized for his service but Paul said
Mr. Hardy's name has been added to the monument.
Derek asked if there would be a stone, sign, etc. to give name recognition to Mr. Hardy.
Kevin said they hope to replace the entrance sign to honor Mr. Hardy and later maybe a
granite or stone marker.
John Hogan was very pleased with the work done by Mr. Mason and Mr. McNatt.
He told the Commission once the sign and marker are in place it will be his job to make
sure the memorial is treated and cared for properly; by state law, any veteran memorial
given to the town is under Mr. Hogan's jurisdiction.
Mr. McNatt told the Commission that there is no monument or memorial dedicated to
Mr. Hardy; World War I veterans have the Dough Boy Statue on the South Common,
World War II veterans have a memorial on the North Common honoring all 36 Mansfield
residents that were lost. Mr. McNatt told the Commission there are different town
squares, the high school and the bridge on South Main Street that have been dedicated
to veterans, so it is not unprecedented that we have something in town that is named
after a veteran. Mr. McNatt told the Commission Mr. Hardy was just lost and forgotten.
Mr. Hardy lived at 369 Maple Street, adjacent to Maple Street Park/Conservation land
and was one of ten children. Mr. Mason said it would mean a lot to the Hardy family to
have a memorial for Robert.
Paul made the motion to accept the plan for the memorial to honor Mr. Hardy with an
entrance sign at the Maple Street Park and at a later date a granite marker.
Linda seconded.
Passed 6-0.
Paul told Mr. Mason he might want to let the Selectmen know what is going on. Paul
told him Michele will write the letter and send it to the selectmen.
Hearing ended at 7: 15 pm
I 3. Eagle Scout Discussion: Nathan and Kenneth Meyers.
Scout Nathan Meyers and Troop Leader Kenneth Meyers wanted to discuss the
possibility of doing something in the Maple Street Park Conservation area as an Eagle
Scout Project. Nathan would like to clean up and mark the trails.
Because of the scope of the project, Mr. Meyers thought this would make a good project
for Troop 17.
Because there are wells on site Paul thought the Water Department should be contacted
about the project. Gary D'Ambra of the Electric Department told the Commission there
are 2 wells in the area of the trails. He was a member of Troop 17 and helped clear the
trails years ago.
Paul told Nathan to put a presentation together, outlining the work to be done and come
back to Conservation.
Hearing ended at 7:25 pm

has tested 15 areas from the wetlands through Mr. D'Ambra's yard. The soil through
the yard is consistent. There is no elevation change with the surrounding areas or on
the lot. She would like Mr. D'Ambra to plant 15 highbush blueberry trees, placing a
