Bea Kearney, Town Accountant stated that there was an error in the calculation in the Fire Dept budget saving 11 thousand dollars from the proposed budget. The hours at the recycling park will be reduced one hour a day as well as a cost reduction measure. Selectman Levine asked why certain items are part of the union contract, such as Health/fitness requirements that give the employee (police/fire) a stipend for fitness. This practice leads to more healthy employees who hopefully do not injure themselves as often or as severely than overweight/out of shape employees. Reimbursement/payment for uniforms or work clothes is also a contractual requirement that could be bargained out of the contract to save money. (Police/Fire/DPW /Engineering/Health are among the depts.) 207 municipal/600 school employees are eligible for longevity payments. Selectman Levine stated this total comes to quite a chunk of change $50k muni/$200k school. Chairman Amoruso then stated that longevity payments are to reward experienced employees who have served the town for many years. An employee is not eligible for longevity until 5 years or service and goes up in increments at 10, 20, 30 years of service. Chairman Amoruso will speak with Jean Miller, Chairman of the School Committee to see what budget discussions they have had and what, if any resolution to the budget reductions have been discussed. Chairman Amoruso and Selectman McCarter felt that the FinComm suggestion of last week in relation to FY09 budget reductions were fair in order to assist the schools in meeting a balanced budget. Board of Selectmen Minutes of April 22,2008 Chairman Amoruso thanked Bea Kearney for all her years of service to the town and wished her well in retirement this fall. Town Manager followed up and expressed Bea has been one of the most wonderful Town Accountants he has ever worked with. She also has the respect of all the dept. heads.
